Wayfinder Studios says the Wyldheart demo can be played on Steam Deck, but the team does not currently recommend it and has not completed Deck optimization. That is a more cautious status than “Steam Deck supported.” Expect a testable experience rather than a verified, polished handheld target for Demo 0.7.2.
Interpret the status correctly
“Playable” answers whether the developers know the demo can run. “Not recommended” warns that performance, controls, interface comfort, or other rough edges can undermine the session. “Optimization pending” means this build should not be used to promise the behavior of a future Early Access or full-release client.
The official Steam system requirements are Windows requirements. They do not form a native SteamOS specification. Proton or another compatibility layer adds another variable, and a successful launch is not proof that every scene, save path, online feature, or input prompt has been verified.
Run a controlled opening test
Install the public Demo client from base AppID 3642910’s listing, not the separate Beta client. Keep Steam online when save retention matters; the demo does not save in offline mode. Confirm the displayed demo version before comparing results with another player.
The developers currently recommend capping the frame rate at 60 as a general demo workaround. On Deck, begin with that ceiling rather than using an uncapped result as the baseline. Test the opening dungeon long enough to cover movement, camera control, interaction aiming, inventory, the skill wheel, darkness, and at least one combat encounter.
Aim the center crosshair directly at loot or interaction targets. If an action seems absent, inspect current bindings before calling it a compatibility failure. Controller support is still incomplete and mouse-and-keyboard is the developers’ recommended input for the demo, which is another reason the handheld experience is not fully recommended.
Protect the save and the party
Do not test in offline mode if you want the character to persist. The current hotfix notes say the Online Save checkbox works, while the FAQ states offline play does not save. Confirm connection state before and after a session.
For co-op, have every player use the same public Demo version. Generate a fresh join code and share it privately. Deck-specific roughness can complicate troubleshooting, so first establish whether the issue also occurs on a Windows PC or with the same account and Demo client. Do not mix the Beta AppID into the test.
Remember that Demo saves are not planned to transfer to Early Access or the full game. The value of a Deck test is learning whether this current slice is comfortable enough for you, not proving permanent support.
Sources checked for Steam Deck status
The direct “playable but not recommended” answer and pending optimization language come from the official Wyldheart Demo FAQs. The Windows requirements and base-game identity are checked against the official Steam listing. The Online Save and join-code fixes are from the team’s Demo 0.7.2 hotfix notes. No checked first-party source upgrades the current demo to a formal recommended Deck configuration.
Report a useful Deck result
Include the demo version, SteamOS version, compatibility selection, resolution, frame cap, control method, online state, and the room or activity where the problem appears. Describe whether the fault repeats after a clean relaunch. Separate performance, input, saving, and multiplayer symptoms rather than grouping everything under “does not work.”
That evidence makes a report actionable and prevents one user’s successful boot from being misread as an official compatibility guarantee.
